Interlude 3

“I thought we were going to use the diminiatures?” Spyral asked Shadow Seraphim as the three former flesh-crafters wandered through the crates and boxes in the storage area of their complex. It had been a good haul. While The Line had been busy with first Ragnarok, and then with the rips in space/time that dropped off yet another distraction, Geneforge, and Shadow had penetrated to the heart of their base and retrieved several pieces of equipment that could be found nowhere else on this Earth. Furthermore Spyral Queen had confirmed that they were not the only ones raiding various places around the world. It would appear that Numen had his own needs as well.

“We are,” Shadow said as they cataloged the equipment. “But these things have to have time to develop. Psiberstar has already contacted the others. He knows they can't stay, but he's going to confirm it down to the last decimal point.”

“So when do the diminiatures come into play?” Geneforge asked.

“Next, my friend, next,” Shadow told him. Then turning to Spyral he asked, “Would you tell us about what you discovered in Crescent City?”

“Actually, it was a few miles to the south of there, near the town of Arcata,” she said. “There's a government lab at one of the universities there where they're developing microsurgery for gene splicing. Several pieces of equipment on Geneforge's list was supposed to be there.”

“I take it that it wasn't?” Gene said somewhat irritably.

“It was,” she told him. “At least when I got there it was.”

“Then what happened?” Gene asked.

“Numen happened,” she told him. “He stepped in, swiped it and left this.” She picked up a stone tablet. Carved into it in the sigils of the celestial language was a very clear message: THIS CACHE IS MINE. YOU AVOID ME, I AVOID YOU.

Shadow gave the stone a Spockian eyebrow, shook his head and said, “That makes things clear. He's not going to support us, but he's not going to get in our way.” Looking over at Gene he asked, “Was the equipment vital? If so we can make sure we get it on this next mission.”

Gene shook his head without taking his eyes from the stone. “It's useful, even needful, but not critical at this time. I am eventually going to need it though.”

“Very well,” Shadow said. “We'll include it in this mission, just to make sure.”

That engendered a surprised and even appreciative look from Gene. “Thank you.”

Shadow smiled, his fangs quite evident and told him, “We are in this together. We all need to have all our resources about us when this comes to a final play, and Abriel figures out what we've done.”

“What we are doing is making an indelible mark on this world,” Spyral said with a smile. “And evidently we're doing it in such a way that even the Patrons are forced to accommodate us.”

“Exactly,” Shadow said. “We have stepped into a very gray area in the war between the light and the dark. We are defecting from both sides and going into business for ourselves.
